Friedlander was brought up in a London Jewish orphanage. In 1958 she and her new husband emigrated to New Zealand, and she became a photographer.

Her photographs, especially of Maori subjects, have made her one of NZ's most respected photographers. Her most famous series of portraits is that of the last surviving Maori women with traditional moko for Michael King's book Moko: The Art of Maori Tattooing. She is a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
