Fever, Fred
Fever went into care as a baby and spent almost his entire childhood in a succession of foster families and children's homes. Some were good but in others he was abused physically, emotionally and sexually. At 13 he was reunited with his birth family but it was a disaster and he returned to care. He became depressed and was in trouble at school; at one point he tried to kill himself.
Eventually he straightened himself out and is now on the staff of Who Cares?, an advocacy group for children in care, and a social services inspector for the government. He is also active (1999) in a class-action suit against the social service authorities responsible for his abuse, the largest such suit in British legal history, with over 200 complainants.
