Dowd spent part of his childhood in a Roman Catholic orphanage. When old enough he joined the US Navy and fought in Vietnam, where he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. He returned home, married and divorced. He then became gradually involved in the Midewiwin religion of the Ojibwa people and was adopted by an Ojibwa medicine man who also became one of his teachers.
He lives in Michigan with his second wife and family, performs native religious ceremonies, teaches Ojibwa culture at a tribal school and works in substance abuse programs.
