Michael Dodson, brother of Patrick, was born in Katherine, Australia. His parents died in 1960 and he was sent to Monivae College, Hamilton, with his brother to be educated. He then studied law and entered the Aboriginal Legal Service, where he worked until 1980. He became a criminal lawyer and also took cases involving Aboriginal land rights.

From 1984 he has been member of a number of several government bodies concerned with Aboriginal rights, medical ethics, etc. In school and at university he was also an outstanding Australian-rules football player and was coach-captain of the winning 1974 All States Aboriginal Football championship team.
