Commager, Henry Steele
Commager was orphaned as a child and raised by his mother's father in Toledo and Chicago.
He became a famous college professor, teaching at New York University, Columbia University and Amherst College. He wrote and edited dozens of books and hundreds of articles, writing both for the ordinary reader and the academic in the fields of American history and the Constitution. He is recognized as one of the towering intellects of the 20th century. Commager married twice and had three children.
