Catches, Pete

1912-93

Also known as Petaya Yuha Mani and Walks With Hot Coals
Lakota (Native American) holy man

Catches was orphaned and then raised in a Catholic mission school. When he left the mission he gradually became involved in traditional Lakota beliefs, reducing his Catholic commitment as traditional religion became more important to him. He was a leader in the Eagle Ceremony, the Sun Dance ritual and the Half-Moon Peyote religion. In later life he rejected most or all European technology.
